So, is the Strait of Hormuz open or not?
One headline says it is open. A video says it is blocked. How to find the evidence you need for today's decisions.
The questions behind the headline
If one source says the strait is open and another says ships are stuck, what should you check first? A logistics team needs to know which vessels can pass through which section, and under what conditions.
Separate the questions and the checks become clearer. Was the video really filmed there? When was it recorded? Have operating conditions changed since? Identifying a filming location and checking today's transit status each require their own evidence.
Clues from a real case
Verifying a video of ships supposedly stranded in Hormuz
Lead Stories investigated a viral video presented as ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. Comparing the coastline, an airport, public footage and vessel-location records, it located the recording near Chittagong, Bangladesh. The finding concerns where this particular video was filmed.

The proposal below adapts a published example to HUMINT. It does not imply that the referenced organization uses HUMINT.
To investigate footage of congested shipping, first identify the original post, upload time and claimed location. Compare location clues such as public maps, coastlines and buildings with independent field observations. Mark the filming time as unverified when it cannot be established.
RequirementWas this video actually filmed in Hormuz? How do the claims about that time compare with the transit notices available now?
Record the original post link and the claimed time and region. Request public operating notices and safely obtainable field observations, distinguishing the current situation from the period described in the post.
Follow-up questions
- Do official operating notices and field observations match the date and region in the claim?
- What independent evidence supports or contradicts the claim, and what remains unverified?
Evidence to request with the answer
Original links and public operating notices, field reports with observation dates and regions, and an evidence list separating facts, assumptions and unverified items.

How to read the limits of the evidence
Compare direct observations from different sources with independent public records. Do not count repeated citations of the same post as separate evidence; review agreements, contradictions and unresolved items separately.
- Record the original link, claimed time and observation time together, checking that historical material is not used as evidence of current conditions.
- Do not count reports quoting the same source as independent evidence. Separate confirmed facts, conflicting information and unverified items.
An answer should state which place and time were checked. That helps distinguish evidence for today's decisions from questions still unresolved. The video fact-check cited here alone cannot establish whether the strait is currently open.
